Your Total Portfolio Includes CashA common mistake that consumers make is to not take into effect all of their investable assets when they calculate their return. For example, I had a couple say that they keep only 5-10% in cash for emergency savings and they did. That cash was sitting in an interest bearing account at a bank. When I saw their statements, however, they also had cash that was inside their brokerage account and they also had cash inside their IRA accounts and they also had cash sitting inside their 401K accounts. When totaled, they had over 20% of their portfolio in cash. This high level of cash meant that they were not invested enough to meet their goals as they thought they were. High cash holdings can reduce the risk of a portfolio but it can also reduce the total return. Don’t make this mistake. How? Have some way to track ALL of your funds.
