A Toast to You!
I’m not one for making New Year’s resolutions but I am goal oriented and a list maker. No sooner do I get things off my list than others pop up. It’s never ending and can feel like you are a guinea pig inside one of those spinning wheels. I am a Coach however, and I work with client’s goals- financial and otherwise in my practice for over twenty years and I have some observations on the matter.
Making a resolution to lose weight, make more money, get a new job, find a lasting relationship, etc. naturally implies that something is wrong with you now. This gets us thinking of just how awful we are -not how healthy and right we want to be. It is a negative start that can spiral into more self loathing which is what we all are very good at. The truth is that we are basically good and have everything that we could ever want right now. You don’t have to travel to third world countries to know that we are all very wealthy in this country. Honor the basic goodness that surrounds you. Make a point of recognizing your own wealth. It can be as simple as being aware that you have fresh water every day to drink, or that you don’t have to run for cover every time a jet passes in the sky.
Most people fail at their aspirations because there is not enough of a strong personal foundation. In coaching there is the Wheel of Life and other assessments to let us know before we work with a client just how full or lacking the basics of life are happening. It covers physical environment, money, career, friends and family, personal growth, significant other, health, fun and recreation. I work with people to build a strong personal foundation in every area of their life. When they have that foundation, then the rest flows easily.
In personal finance, having a solid foundation is just as important. I met a single mother who told me that she recently invested in a real estate deal. She had two young children, and had no savings and no medical insurance, yet she really wanted a piece of real estate. Two years later she lost all of her real estate investment because she couldn’t keep up the payments. Her child had gotten sick and that became her first priority. If she had focused on building a foundation first, she would have been able to keep that real estate.
I will discuss the components of a strong financial foundation in the next newsletter.
Coaching works because it focuses you in two areas. First, you'll be helped to stretch yourself further, take more actions than you would on your own, and devise/implement effective strategies to get what you want. At the same time, you will also be identifying and reducing things that drain and strain you, such as tolerations, stressful situations, difficult relationships, pressured environments and recurring problems.
Coaching needs room in order to work. If you're too busy, rushed, or burdened, you'll be using coaching to push yourself harder, instead of using coaching to become more effective. Simplification gets you space. Space is needed to learn and evolve yourself beyond where you are today.
Instead of a New Year’s resolution, How about celebrating what you have achieved and what it took to accomplish it? Make a list (I am good at those) and see just what you have done in the last year. Make a toast to yourself!
Happy New Year!
